Micro Finishing & Superfinishing: Achieving Sub-Micron Surface Quality

Micro Finishing & Superfinishing: Achieving Sub-Micron Surface Quality

The Science of Surface Finish

In precision engineering, surface finish isn't just about aesthetics — it's about performance. The surface texture of a component directly affects its friction characteristics, wear resistance, fatigue life and sealing capability.

Micro finishing (also known as superfinishing) is a controlled abrasive process that creates an extremely fine surface finish, typically measured in fractions of a micron (Ra values below 0.1Ξm).

Why Surface Finish Matters

Consider a crankshaft journal bearing surface. A rough surface creates:

  • Higher friction — more energy lost as heat
  • Accelerated wear — peaks in the surface break off and become abrasive particles
  • Reduced bearing life — the oil film can't form properly on a rough surface
  • Noise and vibration — surface imperfections create unwanted harmonics

A superfinished surface, by contrast, has a plateau-like texture with very shallow valleys that retain lubricant and very few peaks to cause wear. The result is longer component life, lower friction, reduced noise and improved efficiency.

The Micro Finishing Process

The process uses a fine abrasive film or stone that oscillates against the rotating workpiece under controlled pressure. Key parameters include:

  • Abrasive grit size — typically 9Ξm to 30Ξm for finishing, down to 1Ξm for polishing
  • Oscillation frequency — the rapid back-and-forth motion of the abrasive
  • Contact pressure — carefully controlled to remove material without generating heat
  • Rotation speed — the workpiece rotation speed determines the cross-hatch pattern

The combination of these parameters creates a characteristic cross-hatched surface texture that's ideal for oil retention.

Automating the Process

At Neuteq Group, we've been designing and building automated micro finishing systems since our founding in 2005. Our machines are used by major automotive manufacturers worldwide.

Key Automation Benefits

  • Consistency — automated systems produce identical surface finishes part after part
  • Speed — cycle times are optimised without compromising quality
  • Data logging — every parameter is recorded for complete process traceability
  • Integration — our systems integrate seamlessly with upstream and downstream processes

Applications

Micro finishing is critical in:

  • Automotive — crankshafts, camshafts, transmission shafts, bearing surfaces
  • Aerospace — turbine shafts, bearing races, hydraulic components
  • Medical — orthopaedic implants, surgical instruments
  • Energy — wind turbine bearings, pump shafts

The Future of Surface Engineering

As engines become more efficient and components are pushed to higher performance levels, surface finish requirements continue to tighten. We're constantly developing new techniques and machine configurations to meet these evolving demands.

Our R&D department is actively working on next-generation finishing processes that achieve even finer surface textures while reducing cycle times.
